Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) are effective refrigerants commonly used in mobile air-conditioning, household and commercial cooling applications. And, the fire protection industry has relied on halons for many years as clean, effective fire suppression agents. The U.S. EPA, however, now classifies both groups as Class 1, Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs). Recent scientific studies provide evidence that there is a strong correlation between the thinning of the ozone layer and man’s release of ODSs to the atmosphere. Because the earth’s ozone layer is our only barrier from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, it is important that we work to protect it. Reducing inadvertent emission of these destructive gaseous agents is important to our environment and it is the law.
Although replacement products are now available and new products are under development, many users have not retrofitted their existing cooling systems. If your company is still operating systems that use ODSs it is important that you be aware of the environmental restrictions placed upon
these substances.
