RemTec buys and sells Halon 1301, Halon 2402 and Halon 1211
and HFC-227ea (FM-200)*

RemTec International is a world reclamation leader of clean gaseous fire protection agents such as: Halon 1211, Halon 1301 and Halon 2402 as well as new a new generation of replacement agents such as: NOVEC, and HFC-227ea (FM-200)* Halon gases have high ozone depleting potential (ODP) and are also high in global warming potential (GWP).   The United States is a signatory to the Montreal Protocol which controls the production and consumption of all ozone depleting halocarbon chemicals. Effective January 1, 1994, the production and importation of new Halon was banned in non-Article V countries by the Montreal Protocol Treaty agreement, and on January 1, 2010 production ceases worldwide. RemTec specializes in reclaiming Halon from decommissioned systems and then we recycle Halon for future critical use.

Some of the services RemTec offers:

  • Purchases used Halon worldwide
  • Reclaims Halon to meet international standards
  • Recycles Halon for critical use
  • Long-term Halon banking and storage in bonded warehouse
  • Plasma Arc Halocarbon destruction per TEAP guidelines
  • Advanced fractional distillation of cross-contaminated halocarbons
  • U.S. Department of Transportation cylinder/tank recertification

Unlike other pollutants, once Halon is released to the atmosphere it is impossible to recover.  However, unwanted Halon that is still contained in cylinders and systems bottles can be safely recovered into U.S. DOT bulk tanks that are designed to for long-term safe storage.  Since current regulations prohibit the production of new Halon, recycled Halon is now the only source of supply for future critical use. RemTec specializes in the safe recovery of Halon, reclamation of Halon, recycling of Halon and banking of Halon for future critical use. We also dispose of Halon that cannot be reclaimed through our on-site destruction facility using an advanced Plasma Arc Destruction Technology.

Since there are alternatives to Halon for many fire protection applications, users are taking steps to remove Halon containing equipment from all but the most critical areas. For example, in addition to Halon 1301 total flood applications most Halon 1211 portable extinguishers used in commercial and industrial fire protection can be replaced; therefore a need is emerging for full service Halon disposal facilities that can safely recover and reclaim all Halons.  RemTec International operates the most advanced and comprehensive halocarbon reclamation facility in the world.

RemTec reclaims and banks Halon for critical users such as; the military, aerospace, and petrochemical industries. Although Halon 1301 is a known ozone depleting chemical, there is absolutely nothing wrong with maintaining existing Halon systems if they are used in applications where there are no suitable replacement agents and if the recharged fire protection systems are properly maintained.  Halon 1301 is still an excellent fire suppression agent for high altitude / low temperature applications, and is often the only technically feasible option available.

In accordance with the Montreal Treaty Halon 1301 is being totally phased out of production as of January 1, 2010.  However, Halon that is properly recovered and reclaimed is not prohibited from continued use by the Montreal Protocol in existing fire protection systems.  Commercial and governmental entities are allowed to continue using, importing and exporting used Halon as long as it is redirected from non-critical use to critical use. There is still reclaimed Halon 1301, Halon 1211 and Halon 2402 available if your existing systems discharge, but the supply is limited.

RemTec is an industry leader in the safe recovery and reclaiming of Halon.  However, if we recover Halon and it cannot be reclaimed to an industry standard and then safely recycled, we destroy this unwanted Halon to 99.9999% so it does not harm the environment.

Many Fire protection applications have switched their fire protection systems to new clean replacement agents such as; NOVEC (used in Ansul Sapphire Sytstems), or HFC-227ea (FM-200)*.  RemTec carries a large supply of these fire protection agents for recharge on an emergency basis.  Please contact us at

RemTec is a world leader in Halon gas collection, recycling and disposal

RemTec is your domestic and international full service Halon and Clean Agent Specialist, with ability to collect Halon throughout the US. We buy, sell and service all types and sizes of Halon 1301. As a CFC based gas, Halon 1301, 1211 and 2402 are ozone-depleting agents. Their release to atmosphere during manufacture, decanting to application cylinders and use or misuse in service has contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer. They also have a long atmospheric life. RemTec contracts with companies all over the world to remove Halon, buy Halon, remarket Halon, purchase and recycle their Halon. RemTec has the manpower and expertise to safely remove your fire suppression gas from your data center and building.

Have some old Halon 1211 extinguishers lying around the warehouse? Or are you replacing your current Halon 1301 fire suppression system and need to get rid of the Halon safely? Turn that clutter into cash! RemTec buys Halon 1301 and Halon 1211 at competitive prices. We accept any type of cylinders, big or small, and will return them to you if desired. We will provide all shipping documentation and paperwork for you, and bring a carrier into your facility at a time that's convenient for you. Audit trails for each transaction can also be provided.

Halon that RemTec will collect, dispose of and recycle include:

Bromotrifluoromethane, also known by the trade name Halon 1301, is an organic halide. It was introduced as an effective gaseous fire suppression agent in the 1960s, and was used around valuable materials, such as aircraft, mainframe computers, and telecommunication switching centers, usually in total flooding systems. Halon 1301 is an extraordinarily effective fire extinguishing agent, even at low concentrations. A key benefit of Halon 1301, as a clean agent, is its ability to extinguish fire without the production of residues that could damage the assets being protected. The EPA recognizes that Halon 1301 is a very effective extinguishing agent, and the agency continues to allow the use of Halon 1301 despite the gas's ozone depleting potential. All Halon 1301 now available is recycled by recycling facilities like RemTec.

Bromochlorodifluoromethane, also known by the trade name Halon 1211, or BCF, or Halon 1211 BCF, or Freon 12B1, is a haloalkane. Halon 1211 was introduced as an effective gaseous fire suppression agent around 1973 for use around highly valuable materials in places such as museums, mainframe rooms and telecommunication switching centers. Halon 1211 is a liquid streaming agent. Because Halon is a CFC, production of new Halon ceased in 1994. Halon 1211 is a low-toxicity, chemically stable compound that, as long as it remains contained in cylinders, is easily recyclable by a company such as RemTec.

Dibromotetrafluoroethane is a haloalkane. It is also known under codenames R-114B2 and Halon 2402. It is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 47.2 °C. R-114B2 is occasionally used in fire suppression systems. Halon 2402 is a gaseous agent that is used in fixed total flooding systems. RemTec has the capability to recover and recycle all forms of Halon such as Halon 2402. Halon 2402 is rarely used in the United States.

RemTec can help you receive credit for recycling used Halon with carbon offset credits.
CFC carbon offsets can be used to compensate for the emissions produced by funding an equivalent carbon dioxide saving somewhere else. A carbon offset is an investment in a project or activity that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or sequesters carbon from the atmosphere that is used to compensate for GHG emissions from your own activities. Carbon Credits are purchased and used to “Offset” GHG emissions that companies can not reduce themselves to meet their own carbon emission reduction objectives or compliance. The destruction of certain Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) may qualify for CFC Carbon offsets.  RemTec uses its arc plasma destruction technology and experience to properly destroy ODS material. CFC carbon offsetting provides a mechanism to reduce GHG emissions in the most cost-effective and economically-efficient manner.
